Your hormones shift with age. Your quality of life doesn't have to.

If you've been feeling less like yourself — lower energy, reduced drive, mood changes, or physical decline — acupuncture and integrative medicine offer real, evidence-informed solutions. This is not about willpower. It's physiology, and it's treatable.

⎯ COMMON PRESENTATION

A gradual shift — not a sudden change.

As men move into their 40s, 50s, and 60s, testosterone and other hormones naturally decline. The changes are often subtle at first. Knowing what to look for is the first step toward getting real answers.

▸ Fatigue & Low Energy
Persistent tiredness that doesn't improve with rest. A quiet fading of drive, stamina, and the "get up and go" that once felt effortless — at work, at home, and in your relationships.

▸ Reduced Libido
Decreased interest in sex or changes in sexual performance that affect confidence and relationships. A real, physiological symptom — not a character flaw or inevitable consequence of aging.

▸ Sleep Disruptions
Difficulty falling asleep, frequent waking, or waking unrefreshed. For some men this includes night sweats or feeling unusually warm — symptoms often dismissed or attributed to stress.

▸ Mood Changes
Irritability, low mood, increased anxiety, or a loss of motivation and drive. These shifts can be subtle or quite significant — and are frequently overlooked in men's healthcare.

▸ Brain Fog & Memory
Trouble concentrating, losing your train of thought, word-finding difficulties, or mental fatigue that makes work and decision-making feel harder than they used to.

▸ Body Composition Shifts
More fat around the abdomen, less muscle mass, or difficulty building strength and recovering from workouts — even when you're exercising consistently and eating well.

⎯ OUR APPROACH

A structured course of care — built around your pattern.

We combine East Asian medicine with evidence-based Western care to create a treatment plan targeting the root cause of your symptoms, not just one biomarker.

Initial Visit & Treatment
A thorough intake covering your history, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. We listen first, every time. You'll never feel rushed or dismissed.

Assessment & Labs
Targeted clinical assessment. When appropriate, we order comprehensive hormone panels — testosterone, DHEA, cortisol, thyroid — to build a complete picture of what's driving your symptoms.

Personalized Plan
A treatment plan built around your specific pattern — not a one-size-fits-all protocol. Every recommendation has a clear rationale, explained in plain language.

Ongoing Support
Regular follow-ups to track progress and adjust your plan. Care that evolves as you do, with collaboration with your other providers as needed.

Your treatment may include

  • Acupuncture — Clinically studied for hormonal regulation, stress response, and sleep quality. Targets neuroendocrine pathways that drive symptoms at their source.

  • Herbal Medicine — Botanical formulas tailored to your individual constitution. Adaptogens and targeted herbs support adrenal function, energy, and hormonal balance.

  • Functional Medicine — Comprehensive hormonal, metabolic, and nutritional assessments that consider the full picture — not just a single lab value.

  • Nutraceuticals — Clinically guided vitamin, mineral, and supplement recommendations based on your labs and individual needs.

  • Lifestyle & Nutrition — Practical guidance on sleep hygiene, movement, nutrition, and stress management — the pillars that amplify every other intervention.

  • Collaborative Care — We work alongside your primary care provider so our treatments support your existing medical care, not replace it.

Herbal medicine, labs, and vitamin supplements are billed separately from visit fees — because each is individualized to your specific needs.

Anyone who finds themselves lucky enough to call Dr. Bustillo their doctor knows that he is the absolute best at what he does in so many ways! I came to him first for shoulder pain, and then for help with fertility needs. He is attentive, caring, kind and always made me feel like I was in the best hands for the care I needed at the moment. He is a gem of a person - as both an acupuncturist and a human being.

I came to Dr. Bustillo after experiencing pain in my lower back for years. After one session I was able to stand straight. After six sessions I was able to travel out of the country walk for miles and never experienced any problems. Later in the year I was told I needed to have surgery for a torn rotator cuff. I went to see Dr. Bustillo again and have not need to have surgery. I would recommend him without hesitation as one of the finest human beings I have ever met as well as a skilled and talented doctor in the field of acupuncture and wellness. He is leaving the Austin Area and if necessary I will travel to wherever he is. He is just that good.

⎯ COMMON QUESTIONS

What patients ask before starting

  • Not exactly, though low testosterone is a central feature. ADAM, or Andropause, is a broader term describing the overall hormonal and physiological shifts that occur in aging men, including changes in DHEA, cortisol, thyroid hormones, and other markers beyond testosterone alone.

  • Absolutely not. While testosterone therapy is a safe and effective option for many men, we offer a full spectrum of integrative approaches — acupuncture, herbal medicine, nutritional support, and lifestyle interventions. We’ll discuss all options honestly and respect your preferences every step of the way.

  • Any recent lab work, a list of current medications and supplements, and a brief journal of your symptoms if you've been keeping one. Most importantly, bring your questions — we want to hear everything that's on your mind.

  • We are a self-pay practice. After every visit, we provide a detailed superbill with CPT codes that you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. We also accept FSA and HSA funds — acupuncture is a qualified medical expense for both.

  • We typically recommend 8 sessions for a structured course of hormonal support — one comprehensive intake followed by 7 weekly treatments. This allows enough time to build a sustained physiological response and adjust your plan as your body responds. Some patients continue with maintenance care beyond the initial series.

  • No referral is necessary. You can schedule a consultation directly through our online booking system. If your primary care provider has relevant records or labs, we welcome that information to provide the most informed care possible.

  • No. Our integrative treatments are designed to support and enhance your existing medical care, not replace it. We collaborate openly with your healthcare providers to ensure your care is safe and cohesive.

  • That uncertainty is exactly why a consultation is valuable. We take a thorough intake, assess your full health picture, and—when appropriate—run targeted labs to help clarify what's driving your symptoms. You don't need a diagnosis to reach out. If we're not the right fit for you, we'll assist in finding the proper healthcare provider.
